Can mesothelioma be prevented?

 Can mesothelioma be prevented?

Avoiding exposure to asbestos is the best way to prevent the development of mesothelioma. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the federal agency responsible for developing safety regulations for workers who come into contact with asbestos. Employers are required to follow these regulations and to ensure that their workers have adequate education about safety and the use of protective equipment.

Workers should bring any concerns regarding the safe handling of asbestos to both their employees and union representatives. Workers should also be aware of the risk of bringing home asbestos fibers on their work clothes, skin, hair, and tools. Proper handling of contaminated items should be implemented. Showering at work and changing out of work clothes prior to entering the home can greatly lower the chance of secondhand exposure.

If you are considering doing home repair or remodeling, you should be aware that approximately 3,000 products containing asbestos were in general use up until the late 1980s. You need to use caution when attempting any type of home repair and should consult with experts if you suspect asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a comprehensive booklet that describes asbestos in the home. If you are aware of asbestos in your home or workplace, contact a reputable asbestos abatement company to guarantee safe removal of affected areas. Do not attempt to remove asbestos on your own; hire trained professionals and check their credentials before initiating the work.

Did you know that asbestos is also a causative agent in many cases of lung cancer? Many studies have reported that people who smoke and have asbestos exposure have a sevenfold increase over smokers with no asbestos exposure in the development of lung cancer. Unlike lung cancer, mesothelioma is not caused by cigarettes unless the smoker was also exposed to asbestos.
If you are a smoker, quit now and tell other individuals you know who have been exposed to asbestos to quit smoking.
